Shift Media have expertise in editing, commissioning, project management
and development. We have in-depth knowledge of UK and European education
markets which enables us to develop market-led UK / European originated
book or European adaptations.
Shift Media works flexibly to meet the needs of its clients. We are therefore
very happy to give you quotes for any work that needs doing, even if it
is not part of our normal list of services.
However, we realise that it is useful for you to get an idea of the range
of projects and tasks that we can handle. The list below is therefore
indicative rather than definitive.
Pre-revision read through
When planning a revision of an existing edition, some of our clients
have found it useful to have a detailed, line by line non-expert read
through of a book. This can focus on simplification of language, areas
of weakness in explanation, politically incorrect language, long sentences,
inconsistent style or pedagogy. The result of this is a marked-up copy
of the existing edition, which the author can use alongside reviews and
other feedback to plan and write the new edition.
Proposal and manuscript reviewing
We have a great deal of experience in finding, briefing and managing
reviewers worldwide, creating summaries of the reviewing process which
make it easier to reach firm conclusions.
Market mapping
We can help you to identify potential reviewers and gauge what is happening
in the market by researching a map of the market. The result of this is
often a spreadsheet listing course titles, decision-making lecturers,
books used, numbers of students, links to syllabi etc.
Competitive analysis
We will look at competing books and provide you with an in-depth comparison
in any terms you require, including approach, pedagogy, production values,
style, level, table of contents and supplements pack.
Syllabus analysis / content grids / comparisons
It is crucial that some texts are consistent with current teaching patterns.
We will do a search for syllabi and then match these against your book
or proposal, making suggestions for additional or superfluous content.
Model chapter creation
We are able to work on pedagogy with your authors, responding to competitive
reviews and other feedback to create a model chapter complete with all
the book’s features. Your author can then use this to refer to when
writing other chapters.
Author management
We can take over the management of your author or adapting author throughout
the writing process – arranging batch delivery, reviews and feedback
to keep your book to schedule.
Line editing
We can do a line-by-line edit of your book, bringing in subject-expert
line editors when required.
Picture research / Copy editing / Proof reading / Indexing
We have a network of excellent picture researchers, copy editors, proof readers and indexers if you would like us to manage your book further through the editorial and production process.
